Last night we kept it pretty mellow. We started off at Devassa and sampled their four beers, draught pilsner, pale ale, india and dark. They all tasted pretty close to exactly the same and had absolutely zero hop flavor. Kevin and I are getting very sick or watery flavorless beer. It is also pretty hard to catch a buzz. We had to get a Jamison on the rocks to get the party started.
Sometime while we were in Devassa it started raining. It wasn’t bad and afterwards we walked back to our hostel to see if anything exciting was going on there but then the power went out. It stayed out more or less for the rest of the night so when we were waiting for it to come back on we went to see if the power was on at a bar that was recommended to us by some waitresses from a couple nights ago called Mud Bug. The power was out all over town, we would later learn that it was out all over Brazil actually and we couldn’t find Mud Bug anyways. We did find a shady bar with shady people and a guy named Tony Montana. You get the picture as to what his deal was with him. We cut out of there, went back to the hostel area, grabbed some beers in the dark at the corner luncheonette that stayed open during the rain and darkness and hung out. A bunch of local Brazilians hang out at this corner spot and drink beers on the sidewalk in front so it was cool. Power came back on at around midnight but the night was pretty much over by that point so we decided to save it for the next day. All in all though it was a good night even though there was no light. It kept things interesting. Also everyone was still selling beer too so that was good.
This morning we woke up at around 8:30AM, got an acai and granola, a traditional Brazilian breakfast at Beach Sucos and then walked down Ipanema beach. Very beautiful, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. White sand and blue water for five miles in either direction and all next to an awesome city, palm trees, beach kiosks to get drinks at, hot women in small bikinis, pretty good. I think we are going to head inland now though and check out the Botanical Gardens.
