Arrived in our final Amazon Jungle destination after a very long but relaxing boat ride. Right now it’s dark and the crew of the boat look like they are all getting ready for bed and to shut off the generator so I’ll make this short.
The spot we are at on the river is really calm and serene. It’s very dark and the river and the surrounding jungle quickly sucks up every beam of light that manages to escape from our small boat. It makes you feel small but also at peace because things are simple in your small area of light and life.
Earlier in the evening we tried to fish for piranha off of a motorized canoe with a local Amazonian kid that we met up with at his family’s houseboat/dock/store. After a beautiful sunset it got dark quickly and we gave up on fishing and started shining a spotlight around the banks of the river to look for the reflective eyes of caiman, a small member of the crocodile family.
It was pitch black out and the bugs flocked to the spotlight but as we travelled around the small inlets of the river we could see many pairs of red dots floating on the surface of the water. These red dots are caiman eyes reflecting back the bright spotlight. Apparently the spotlight blinds the caiman for a moment so that the boat can slowly approach them and then the skill of your guide takes over. Herman caught one with his hands and let us hold it and take some pictures with it. It was good stuff, got a rush from the thrill of the hunt. Later we went back to the mother ship and ate a chicken dinner cooked by the boats chef. Very tasty. Going to bed now, have to wake up at 5:00AM to do I don’t know what, a bunch of stuff from what it sounds like, we’ll see.
