Okay, so I really hate hammocks. My spine is so compressed right now that I am two inches shorter than normal. Had a hell of a time trying to sleep last night, had back pain and I skipped out on an early morning canoe ride this morning with Kevin and Herman so that I could lay on the flat deck of the boat for a few hours. I was in a world of pain earlier but Kevin gave me a Vicodin and it cured me right up.
Yesterday we crossed the river and landed the boat in a small village in a cove. We hiked a couple miles past the village and to a small waterfall and campsite to sleep in the jungle. The water fall was very serene, about six feet high and was almost too beautiful to seem real. We lounged around the waterfall area, ate some chicken barbequed on sticks over the camp fire, drank some brew, I crapped in the jungle, checked out an insect highway made by leaf cutter ants, watched a firefly that looked like an ember from our fire float around camp and went to bed in our hammocks that are hanging outside under a little lean-to. This place is the definition of creepy crawly and it was a crazy night. The ground is moving with bugs, sort of like the temple in the Indiana Jones movies.
After tossing and turning all night we woke up early and hiked back to the boat. Like I said I laid down and Kevin went out to see some animals or something in a canoe that he had to row around himself but you’ll have to ask him about that.
We ate lunch which was our piranha stew as promised. It was good, tasted like chicken, very mild, pretty boney. I stripped down and washed myself off in the river with soap which was cool because I haven’t showered for three days and the water was very warm, felt like 80. Lots of plant mater floating in the brown/black water, but no diseases or urethra sharks so far. We’re now headed back to Manaus to wait for a red eye tonight that will drop us in Rio de Janeiro tomorrow morning. I need to do laundry really bad. Had a great time out here in the jungle and I won’t forget this.
